The night was electric from the minute the gates opened at the Canton Civic Center for the Season and Home Opener for the Canton Charge. Unfortunately the night ended with plenty of "Energy" also, as in Iowa Energy. The Canton Charge fell to the Iowa Energy 100-82, in a game that was close up until halftime where the score was 54-50 Iowa. It got out of hand for the Charge early in the 3rd quarter and they never came back. The Charge were out sized, out hustled, and out shot. The Charge were plagued by poor pick and roll defense and could not establish a post game throughout most the night against the bigger and taller post players of the Energy. This made the Charge rely more on their jump shooting which left much to be desired. The Charge shot 38% from the field and 78% from the free throw line. The lack of size for the Charge also resulted in them being out rebounded 51 to 29. Iowa took advantage of second chance points and put the game away in the second half. The Charge were led by forward Travis Franklin who had 25 points 8 rebounds and 1 assist. Hometown guard Keith McLeod added 19 points 1 rebound and 3 assists. Charge first round pick Tyrell Biggs started the game strong with 14 points in the first half and then did not score in the second half. The Charge were also plagued by turnovers and silly mistakes. They had multiple turnovers on inbound passes and at times seemed to lack concentration. Coach Alex Jensen will have a lot to teach from after tonight game, but with a new group of guys in a new city with a new coach some of tonight can be expected.
The Cavaliers organization put on a first rate show tonight at the Canton Civic Center for the sold out crowd close to 4,000. The Cavs brought with them them Hype-man Ahmaad Crump, the Scream Team, Cavalier Girls, and of course MoonDog and Sir Cavalier. The entertainment included several timeout contests dance routines and a half time show by the Red Panda Acrobats- a bowl balancing unicycle rider. Unfortunately for the Charge this may have been the most impressive moment of the night. The atmosphere was electric and very similar to the Q minus the fire shooting scoreboard. Also, calling the game was FSO Play by Play analysts Fred McLeod and Mr. Cavalier Austin Carr. As the NBA Lockout drags on and multi-millonaires and billionaires fight over billions of dollars, this city had basketball and while they may not yet know the names on the back of the jersey's they welcomed them with open arms and embraced the name on the front of the jersey... Canton.
